Few people in the history of mankind have had more concentrated experience in Open Pit Barbecuing than Arthur Watts. Living until the ripe old age of 108, his introduction into the art began around the age of 6, and continued until his death over a century later!
Arthur started out life as a slave in in 1837. His assigned task from that very early age was to tend the cooking fires on the farm that he served. Over time his expertise in Open Pit barbecuing grew. At the age of 27 Arthur was given his freedom through the Emancipation Proclamation. His skill at open pit barbecuing was one of the few possessions that he took with him out of bondage in 1863.

Arthur earned his keep for the entirety of his incredible 108 years through his mastery of open pit barbecuing. Though lacking formal education, Arthur was diligent in his study of not only the open pit technique, but also blending unique sauces and seasonings to compliment the meats which he prepared. Arthur put nearly a century into refining his recipe collection. The results are bold and unmatched flavor which simply can’t be found elsewhere. Arthur’s recipes withstand the test of time, and we are immensely proud to share them with you!
